Step Nine: Establish and Build Link Popularity of the Web Site This step and step five, Optimizing Each Page, are the two most important parts of getting your site in the top ten on major search engines.

One of the most important steps in SEO is establishing links. This means convincing other related sites to link to your site. I contact related sites and request a linking partnership for my clients.

Search engines consider links "votes" of approval. In other words, if a site is linking to yours, it is saying that your site is worthy of visiting. And the most important part of this is the text within the link. Look at these two examples:

• Top Ten Search Engine Placement -the words inside the link tell something to the search engines - that this site is about the text in the link. The other way is having a text link that looks like this:
• www.bluehyperlink.com - not a bad link, since it does vote for your site, but it says nothing about your site to the search engines that spider this link

Here's my philopsophy on building links:

• Get Quality Keyword Rick Text Links to Your Site from other web sites by exchanging links with related companies, acquiring keyword rich text links.
• Build and maintain a resources directory that contains links to your partners.
• Try to establish approximately 20 new inbound links to the website each month - too many new links can be considered spamming the search engines and can knock your site out of the top ten.

A site that has no incoming links has little chance of ranking in the top ten for any kind of competitive phrase.
