Step Six: Submit Your Site To the Major Directories

Taking the time to submit your site to the major and even minor directories is a great way to get static inbound text links to your site. Once this has been done, and you submit your site to the search engines, you'll rank better because of these static incoming links.

Did you know that Google actually checks to see if your site is listed in Yahoo's Directory and the Open Directory? Here's the process I go through from beginning to end:

  1. Create a short, medium and long list of page titles, descriptions and keyword lists - each directory has different maximum numbers of characters as well as guidelines.
  2. Review the Web Site using a Directory Submission Checklist that was written by one of the greatest experts in SEO, Shari Thurow, author of Search Engine Visibility.
  3. Submit the site to each directory using software that keeps a record of the submissions.
  4. Run a report showing client which directories to which their web site was submitted.
