Step Five: Optimize Each Web Page with one or two Targeted Key Phrases in Mind

An optimized web page is like a high performance engine in a car. When it's built well and maintained, it delivers optimum performance.

This is the most important step I take to get your site into the top search results of major search engines. I use search engine optimization softare that looks at the top ten sites for any given search term on any major search engine and model that page after the sites in the top ten. Here's how I do it:

    1. Run software that analyzes the web page against the top ten matches in Google, MSN or Yahoo for that specific key phrase. The software gives suggestions on what to do to the page. Here's an example of a sample report so you can see what I do; basically, it tells me things like:
      • Your page title is too long, use 8 words
      • You used the key phrase too many times. Use it at most three times.
      • Consider adding more text to the body of the page
      • You have too many words in your page description, you should have at most 30 words.
    2. I modify the various elements of the web page to conform to the suggestions of the software.
    3. I then run the software again to analyze the changes I made. I make final changes in order to follow the directions as closely as possible.
    4. I repeat this process with every single web page in the web site.

This process looks at the top search results and models a web page after them. It's not the only reason why search engines list these sites in the top ten, they also look at the number of incoming links, time established and a myriad of other factors. AN IMPORTANT NOTE: these factors (the search engines call them "algorithms") change every few months! Each search engine is its own business, and they all have differnt business models. Some change every 3 months, some every 6 months. The software I use stays up to date monthly. From time to time, in order to keep that page ranking well, I run the software again and tweak the page a bit to compare to the latest results.
